[MinnowBoard] Ethernet with android-4.4.2_r1-ia2

Hello,

I would like to use Ethernet with Android on Minnowboard MAX.

I have installed android-4.4.2_r1-ia2 successfully to Minnow board MAX but
I have a trouble with Ethernet connection. Minnow board MAX has a Ethernet
connector and doesn't have WiFi. There is no item for setting Ethernet
connection in Setting application of the Android. The Android OS could not
connect to the Internet. Of course my ethernet connection works well.

This is the android I have installed.

https://01.org/android-ia/downloads

It was released in 28 Apr, 2014.

Also, I tried to install Android-x86 to Minnowboard MAX but I couldn't.

http://www.android-x86.org/download

I have downloaded android-x86-4.4-r2.img, which is Android-x86 4.4-r2 EFI
image. Minnow board MAX requires EFI installer. However, it didn't boot.
I've installed the same Android to my virtual machine and it seems to be
fine. If I can install android-x86-4.4-r2 to my Minnowboard MAX, it could
be the best solution for me. It was released in Jan 1, 2015 and newer than
Intel's android-4.4.2_r1-ia2.

I appreciate your time to read my question. I would be grateful if you
could give me information. My purpose is to install Android on Minnowboard
and develop applications.

Keisuke

Keisuke,

I have the same issue with Ethernet connection with Intel-IA but haven't
taken the time to investigate the issue.

For Android-x86 the installer for UEFI is not complete or unusable at this
stage but booting up with Minnow using 4.4-r2 (
http://www.android-x86.org/releases/releasenote-4-4-r2) should work fine as
I know few people have done it.

Cheers

Hello Nanik,

Thank you for the information. Can you tell me a little more about it? May
I ask what does "booting up with Minnow using 4.4-r2" mean?

Now, I have booted with Intel's android. Should I run 4.4-r2 installer on
this Android?

Thank you.

The latest android-x86 code drop (
http://www.android-x86.org/releases/releasenote-4-4-r2) will boots up fine
with MinnowMax so there isn't anything that you need to do. This is taking
into account you are booting using USB drive (that's what I have done).
However, the provided installer in android-x86 internally is not UEFI based
so this means you won't be able to install it, support for UEFI installer
will come later (don't know when)

You can try to run the android-x86 installer and see how it goes as I have
not tried installing android-x86 on storage that already has Intel-IA
installed in it. Worth the shot if anything to see if it works.

Cheers

Hello Nanik,

Thank you again. I am trying to run the android-x86 installer but I have no
idea.

I have copied the all files in android-x86-4.4-r2.img to my usb flash
drive. Then, I have connected it to Minnowboard, booted and selected shell.
I can see all files but I have no idea to run the installer. There are

efi
initrd.img
install.img
kernel
ramdisk.img
system.sfs

files in my USB.

If you could tell me how to run the installer, I would be really grateful.

Thank you.

Hi Keisuke,

I've made a video to show how to boot android-x86 up thought would be
easier rather than explaining it

The image I build from source but you could use the .img file that you
download too and use 'dd' to copy it to your USB drive.

Hope that helps

Hi Nanik,

I've successfully installed Android-X86 on Minnowboard MAX. What a pleasure
it is for me you have made a movie for me. I really appreciate it.

I still have one problem. The installer asks "Do you want to install boot
loader GRUB?" When I choose Yes, my scrolls then installer halts. I have
uploaded a picture to explain the problem.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bw8qhs8eJQ0tdUFzYUNabG03dFk/view?usp=sharing

When I choose Skip, the installer finishes installing, then I can use
Android-X86. However, I could not boot again probably because there is no
boot loader.

Thank you again and if you know solution for the problem, please let me
know.

Keisuke

I would recommend running Android-IA instead of Android-x86.org <http://android-x86.org/> on MinnowMax. Not because there’s anything wrong with Android-x86.org’s work, but Minnowboard MAX is officially supported by Android-IA over at 01.org <http://01.org/>.

http://01.org/android-ia <http://01.org/android-ia>

Is there any reason/use-case that Android-x86.org <http://android-x86.org/> would be preferable?

Hi Christopher,

Just because Android-IA doesn't seem to support Ethernet connection, I have
been trying to install Android-x86. I have already installed the newest
version of Android-IA. It was released about 8 months ago. On the other
hand, Android-x86 is often maintained.

I have installed Android-x86 on my virtual machine. Compared to Android-IA,
Android-x86 seems to be fine. Android-x86 has much more applications and
setting items.

Nanik introduced his movie. Android-x86 seems to work well. There are
Internet connection with Minnowboard MAX.

If Android-x86 had not had an UEFI boot problem, Android-x86 would be
better solution, I think.

Android-IA fully supports Ethernet connections. If it’s not working on Minnowboard MAX (and I think it should, if you use the MinnowMax target), you can use a USB 2.0/USB 3.0 Ethernet connection. Any USB Ethernet adapter that enumerates as a Realtek chipset will work.

Forgot to mention, Android-IA hasn’t been updated in 8 months, that is true. However, it parallels the latest production release of Android that Intel has certified (4.4.2). No Intel tablet running Android has received 5.0.

I can say Intel expects to ship a Lollipop release, while I can’t say when, it will be when it’s stable and around when Lollipop ships for Intel tablets. Intel only ships builds that are stable, for good reason.

Hi Christopher,

Thank you for your reply. I have not tested a USB 2.0/USB 3.0 Ethernet
connection because Minnowboard MAX has an onboard Ethernet connector. I
would prefer using an onboard Ethernet. Minnowboard MAX has only two USB
connectors.

As I wrote in another post, I have installed Android-X86 but still have a
GRUB problem. I will continue groping for solutions including using
Android-IA.

I am looking forward to using Android-IA 5.0 Lollipop.

Thank you again.
